FREEDOM
Reflections on Freedom
Freedom is more than simply doing whatever we want to do, whenever we have an urge. In fact, ultimately freedom is not about what we do or don’t do; it is fundamentally about our inner life—our consciousness. It is our capacity for consciousness that makes us fully human. To be free is to consciously choose our actions and attitudes in reaction to the circumstances of life.
Freedom is achieved through a commitment to inner work, wherein we explore and integrate various aspects of our consciousness, for example, our fears and our shadow side. Freedom is following our heart and making choices by listening to our inner voice of intuition--the voice of the soul.
Our soul speaks to us in many ways, including through the wisdom of the body. Freedom is actively listening to our inner sources of wisdom, rather than being influenced by the many aspects of modern daily living that can divert our attention or create noise and confusion within. Once we do clear away the noise and confusion, we are able to express our innate creativity, which is one of the most rewarding of human experiences.
Toltec wisdom presents some of the most practical teachings on achieving true freedom. There are many helpful teachers who have published books on the Toltec approach to freedom (e.g. Carlos Castaneda, Don Miguel Ruiz, Victor Sanchez and Theun Mares).
Although freedom is our birthright as human beings, we must consciously claim it. True freedom is gained through courage and commitment and is tempered by love.
