Synchronicity
Reflections on Synchronicity
Synchronicity is the bridge between our inner world and the outer world around us. Let me give you an example from my own experience to illustrate.
On a sunny summer morning last year I was walking along a sidewalk with my daughter. I had been invited to a Detroit Tiger baseball game that evening, and I was thinking about the fact that I would like to wear a Tiger baseball cap while cheering on the home team. I pondered where I should buy the cap, since I didn’t own one. I thought of buying one at the ballpark, but I knew that they overcharged for everything from beer to ball caps.
As I was thinking these very thoughts I looked down a few steps ahead and there right in the middle of the sidewalk lay a Detroit Tiger baseball hat! I became quite excited as I realized I was experiencing a synchronicity—my thoughts about a Detroit Tiger baseball cap were being reflected in the physical world right there before my eyes.
Now I’m sure you would agree that this is a rather mundane example of a synchronistic event. Nevertheless, if we consciously acknowledge such experiences, suddenly our life becomes delightful and full of surprises.
There are certainly more dramatic versions of synchronicity that have been documented, such as when a mother wakes up one night with a feeling that something is wrong with her son who is overseas fighting in a war. She finds out later that her premonition is tragically correct—her son has been killed in action.
What do synchronicities have to do with personal power? To recognize and acknowledge the connection between our thoughts and the physical world is a tremendously empowering experience. This direct connection between the unseen world of our mind and the visible world of objects and events can have a dramatic impact on our view of ourselves and our existence. Suddenly we feel less separated from the rest of Nature and more connected. It’s like an unplugged electrical appliance whose power cord is now plugged back into the power source.
The occurrence of synchronicities in your daily life can become an indicator that you are “in the flow”. Synchronicities of the most mundane kind can become signs, providing you with messages that you interpret according to your own unique perspective.
(By the way, I didn’t place any significance in finding the Detroit Tiger hat, and I didn’t pick it up and wear it to the game that night either.)
